Fitness Gyms – Are They Safe and Heathy for People?

Fitness gyms are in business to help people be healthy and stay healthy. But are all gym facilities safe and healthy? To be fully healthy, facilities need to keep both the air and surfaces clean of viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens.

Pathogens such as Sars-Covid-19 and others float through the air, land on surfaces, and can be harmful to people, even healthy people. How can we control or eliminate these little devils?

Here are approaches often taken for sanitizing gyms:

  1. Air moving UVC light systems in HVAC units and standalones. These effect only with the air that pass through the UVC light. These do nothing to the air that does not encounter the light source and have no effect on surfaces.
  2. Air moving filter systems. As the UVC light products, these only clean the air than come into the filtering system. These do nothing for surfaces or air that does not pass through the filters. Also, filter systems are a regular labor issue.
  3. Portable UVC Light and Fogging Systems are limited by time of exposure and if there is direct contact. Most are not safe for humans or animals when there is direct contact and are very labor intensive. AND these systems have negligible effect on the air and surfaces throughout the following hours.
  4. Use of cleaners, both toxic and non-toxic, for wiping down equipment and cleaning facilities. Over time these can be toxic to staff and customers due to long term contact and buildup on equipment. Often staff do not read the labels or pay attention to directions. If chemicals do not remain long enough on surfaces as directed, sanitation is limited. If left on surfaces too long, buildup can occur.

A Two-Phase Recommendation for keeping fitness gyms healthy:

  1. Provide peroxide generating systems via HVAC duct modules or Mobile units. Both systems provide continuous air and surface pathogen reduction, up to 99.96% effective, through transforming H2O molecules into H2O2 peroxide molecules which suspend in the air and land on hard surfaces to provide protection against Sars-Covid-19 and other viruses as well as bacteria and molds.
  2. Treat surfaces with light activated long lasting titanium dioxide from TiCoat. Unlike other cleaning products, this clear coating continues to clean and deodorize surfaces and allows for using only water and rags during daily cleaning. NO TOXIC cleaners.

RFP – Request For Proposal. A Critical Step Where Public Money Is Spent

Over the years I have seen lighting projects put out for bid using a specification written by and/or favoring one specific manufacturer or supplier locking in the product to the project with excessive costs to the customer.  WAIT!  Where public money will be spent for a specific product type (lighting, electronic message centers, etc.) go the RFP route as you would in seeking an architect to design your next building.

How to proceed:  Contact major manufacturers or their suppliers inviting them to provide recommendations to meet your needs.  You have the option to make general requirements to be met, but keep these generic not favoring a specific manufacturer.  Such requirements may be based on existing conditions, location, schedules, controls, and timing.  The next step is to evaluate the quality and the costs with equal importance to avoid getting the least expensive low quality products and services to meet your needs.

Once you have narrowed down the product and services, the rules you have to live by may require this be put out to bid.  No worries.  List the specifics and leave open for equals.  In the final decision it is strategic to make sure equals are no less than equal.  In the end, you will have a selection that will make the best use of your resources, and allow you to sleep at night.

NO DRIVER in NEW LED LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY

Imagine an LED lighting fixture without the failure prone driver.  The driver in LED lighting fixtures is the weak link limiting fixture manufacturers to providing 5 year warranties.  Extended warranties are sometimes offered by at an increase in price, but do not provide guaranteed longer life.

Imagine a fixture that has no DC switching making it prone to RF and EMF interference for electronic equipment not associated with the lighting; scanners, radios, etc.

Imagine a fixture with a MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) rating of 450,000 hours.  That is over 50 years!

New technology is providing realization to these imaginations.  AC Direct LED technology is also increasing the efficacy of fixtures, and via mesh wiring of the LEDs provides a much longer live of the initial lumen output.
